What Does OPC UA Stand For?

OPC UA stands for OPC Unified Architecture. OPC originally stood for OLE for Process Control, a Microsoft Windows-based standard. OPC UA is the modern, platform-independent successor — it runs on Windows, Linux, and embedded systems, communicates over standard TCP/IP networks, and incorporates built-in security.

Why OPC UA Matters for Industry 4.0

Traditional industrial protocols (Modbus, PROFIBUS, EtherNet/IP) are excellent for machine-level control but were not designed for plant-wide data integration or cloud connectivity. OPC UA addresses this gap:

  • Vendor-neutral — a Siemens PLC, an Avalue industrial PC, and a Ignition SCADA server can all communicate via OPC UA without custom adapters
  • Secure by design — built-in encryption (TLS), authentication, and access control
  • Rich data model — transmits not just values but context (units, data type, timestamp, quality)
  • Platform-independent — runs on Windows, Linux, ARM, and embedded RTOS

Avalue industrial PCs run OPC UA servers and clients natively on Windows or Linux, making them ideal OPC UA gateway nodes for your factory. Contact TSL Automation Solutions for integration guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OPC UA in industrial automation?
OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is an industrial communication standard providing a platform-independent, secure method for exchanging data between industrial equipment (PLCs, sensors, drives) and supervisory systems (SCADA, MES, cloud platforms). Unlike older OPC DA (which required Windows COM/DCOM), OPC UA runs on any OS, uses modern security (TLS encryption, certificate-based authentication), and provides a rich information model beyond simple data values.
What is the difference between OPC DA and OPC UA?
OPC DA (Data Access) is the older Windows-only standard using Microsoft COM/DCOM technology — requiring Windows on both client and server, difficult to configure across networks, and lacking modern security. OPC UA replaces it with a platform-independent (Windows, Linux, embedded) protocol using TCP/IP, TLS encryption, and certificate authentication. All new industrial software and devices should use OPC UA; OPC DA only remains for legacy system integration.
What devices support OPC UA?
OPC UA is supported by most modern PLCs (Siemens S7-1500, S7-1200, Mitsubishi iQ-R, Beckhoff TwinCAT, B&R), SCADA software (Ignition, WinCC, InTouch, iFIX), MES systems, industrial PCs running OPC UA server software (KEPServerEX, Matrikon, Ignition Edge), and cloud IoT platforms (Azure IoT Hub, AWS IoT, Google IoT). Older PLCs without native OPC UA use OPC UA gateways.
Is OPC UA secure for industrial use?
Yes — OPC UA is designed with industrial security requirements: it uses TLS 1.2/1.3 encryption for data in transit, X.509 certificate-based authentication for endpoint identification, and configurable security policies (None/Sign/Sign+Encrypt). This makes OPC UA suitable for secure communication between OT and IT networks, unlike legacy protocols like Modbus which have no built-in security.
Does TSL Automation supply OPC UA compatible hardware in India?
Yes — Avalue industrial PCs supplied by TSL Automation Solutions run Windows IoT and support OPC UA server software (KEPServerEX, Ignition Edge, Matrikon OPC UA) for connecting PLCs and field devices to SCADA and cloud systems. Cermate HMIs support OPC UA client connectivity on selected models. Contact our Mumbai team for OPC UA integration support.
