What Is LVDS?

LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signalling) is a high-speed digital interface used to transmit video data from a processor or display controller directly to an LCD panel. It uses two wires carrying opposite voltage signals — the receiver measures the difference between them, which makes it highly immune to electrical noise — critical in industrial environments with motors, drives, and switching equipment nearby.

Why Industrial Systems Use LVDS

Unlike consumer displays that use HDMI or DisplayPort, many industrial Panel PCs and embedded systems use LVDS to connect the internal motherboard to a built-in LCD. LVDS cables are flat and flexible — they fit neatly inside compact enclosures. The interface also supports extended temperature ranges and vibration-resistant connectors required for industrial use.

LVDS vs Other Display Interfaces

InterfaceUse CaseDistance
LVDSEmbedded/integrated displaysUp to 1m (internal)
eDPModern embedded displaysUp to 2m (internal)

DisplayPortHigh-resolution external monitorsUp to 3m (passive)
VGALegacy external monitorsUp to 10m

LVDS in Avalue Panel PCs

Most Avalue industrial motherboards and Panel PCs include an LVDS or eDP connector for direct panel integration. When specifying a custom Panel PC or embedded display system, confirm whether your panel requires single-channel or dual-channel LVDS — dual-channel supports higher resolutions at faster refresh rates. TSL Automation can help match the right Avalue motherboard to your display requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is LVDS in industrial displays?
LVDS (Low-Voltage Differential Signalling) is a high-speed digital interface that transmits video data from a processor or display controller directly to an LCD panel using two wires carrying opposite voltage signals. The receiver measures the voltage difference, making it highly immune to electrical noise — critical in industrial environments with variable frequency drives, welding equipment, and motors that generate significant EMI.
What is the difference between LVDS and HDMI for industrial monitors?
LVDS is a panel-internal interface used to connect an embedded processor directly to an integrated display panel — it is not used for external monitor connections. HDMI is an external video interface for connecting separate displays to a computer. Industrial Panel PCs with embedded displays use LVDS internally; standalone industrial monitors connect via HDMI, DisplayPort, or VGA from an external PC.
What are common LVDS configurations in industrial panel PCs?
Industrial Panel PCs use single-channel LVDS (up to 1366x768 at 65MHz) for smaller displays and dual-channel LVDS (up to 1920x1200 at 165MHz) for larger panels. The number of lanes (18-bit or 24-bit) determines colour depth — 24-bit LVDS supports true 16.7 million colours. The connector is typically a 20-pin or 30-pin FFC/FPC connector on the display panel.
Can LVDS displays be replaced or upgraded in industrial Panel PCs?
LVDS display panels can be replaced, but the replacement must match the original panel specifications exactly — resolution, panel size, backlight type, LVDS channel configuration, and connector pinout. Mismatched panels will not display correctly or may damage the display controller. Always consult the panel PC datasheet or manufacturer before replacing an LVDS panel.
Do Avalue Panel PCs use LVDS displays?
Yes — Avalue Panel PCs use LVDS interfaces to connect their integrated LCD panels, which is standard for embedded panel PC designs. TSL Automation Solutions supplies Avalue Panel PCs across various display sizes from 7-inch to 21.5-inch with LVDS-connected industrial-grade panels.
