What Does IP Rating Mean?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, defined by IEC standard 60529. An IP rating has two digits: the first indicates protection against solid particles (dust), the second against liquids (water).

IP Rating Breakdown

RatingDust ProtectionWater ProtectionTypical Application
IP54Dust protectedSplashing waterLight industrial, outdoor kiosks
IP65Dust tightWater jets (12.5 mm nozzle)Factory floor, general industrial
IP66Dust tightPowerful water jetsFood processing, outdoor
IP67Dust tightTemporary immersion (1m, 30 min)Wet processing, chemical plants
IP69KDust tightHigh-pressure steam cleaningDairy, pharma, abattoir

Which IP Rating Do You Need?

  • General factory floor (machining, assembly) — IP65 minimum
  • Food & beverage (daily hose-down) — IP66 or IP67
  • Pharmaceutical, dairy, beverage (steam/chemical wash) — IP69K
  • Outdoor installations — IP66 minimum
  • Cold storage (condensation risk) — IP65 with heater option

TSL Automation Solutions supplies Avalue and Cermate products across the full IP65–IP69K range. Contact us to confirm the correct IP rating for your environment before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IP rating mean for industrial equipment?
IP (Ingress Protection) rating is an IEC 60529 standard that classifies the degree of protection an enclosure provides against solid particles (first digit, 0–6) and liquids (second digit, 0–9K). For example, IP65 means fully dustproof (6) and protected against water jets from any direction (5). IP ratings are critical for specifying industrial computers, HMI panels, and sensors for factory environments.
What IP rating do I need for a factory floor HMI panel?
IP65 front panel sealing is the minimum recommended for industrial HMI panels on production floors — fully dustproof and protected against water jets. For food, beverage, and pharmaceutical wash-down areas, specify IP66 (powerful water jets) or IP69K (high-pressure steam cleaning). The IP rating must apply to the installed front face of the panel in the control cabinet cutout — verify the complete system rating, not just the device in isolation.
What is the difference between IP65, IP66, and IP69K?
IP65: dustproof + protected against water jets (12.5 litres/minute at 6.3kPa from any direction). IP66: dustproof + protected against powerful water jets (100 litres/minute at 100kPa from any direction). IP69K: dustproof + protected against high-pressure, high-temperature steam jets (80°C water, 80–100 bar, 14–16 litres/minute at close range). IP69K is required for steam cleaning in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical facilities.
Does IP rating also apply to temperature?
No — IP rating only specifies protection against solid particle and liquid ingress. Operating temperature range is a separate specification. An IP65 device may only be rated for 0°C to 50°C operation, which would be inadequate for a cold storage facility. Always check both the IP rating and the operating temperature range against your installation environment.
Do Cermate HMI panels and Avalue Panel PCs have IP ratings?
Yes — Cermate HMI panels typically have IP65 front panel sealing (IP66 on selected wash-down models). Avalue industrial Panel PCs have IP65 front panels as standard, with IP66 and IP69K stainless steel options for hygiene-critical environments. TSL Automation Solutions can confirm the exact IP rating for specific models. Contact our Mumbai team with your environment requirements.
