PROFINET IRT250μsHard real-timeSiemens, multi-vendor
EtherNet/IP500μs–10msSoft real-timeRockwell, Omron
Modbus TCP1ms–100msNon-deterministicUniversal

EtherCAT: Fastest and Most Deterministic

EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology) achieves 31.25 microsecond cycle times — fast enough for the most demanding motion control and synchronisation applications. It uses a unique "processing on the fly" technique where each slave device reads and writes its data as the Ethernet frame passes through, without buffering. EtherCAT is the protocol of choice for high-axis-count servo systems and pick-and-place robots.

PROFINET: Siemens Standard

PROFINET is the standard for Siemens S7 and TIA Portal ecosystems. PROFINET RT (real-time) achieves 1ms cycle times; PROFINET IRT (isochronous real-time) achieves 250μs for motion control. If you are using Siemens PLCs, PROFINET is the natural choice for all Ethernet field devices.

Modbus TCP: Universal but Not Real-Time

Modbus TCP runs on standard TCP/IP and is supported by virtually every PLC, HMI, and SCADA system. It is not deterministic — response times vary with network load. For SCADA data acquisition and non-time-critical monitoring, Modbus TCP is the simplest and most compatible choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between standard Ethernet and industrial Ethernet?
Standard Ethernet (as used in offices) uses CSMA/CD access control with non-deterministic timing — unsuitable for real-time machine control where guaranteed response times are required. Industrial Ethernet protocols (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT, Modbus TCP) add determinism, real-time prioritisation, and cycle times of 1–10ms over the same physical Ethernet hardware, making them suitable for PLC-to-device communication in automation.
What is the difference between PROFINET and EtherNet/IP?
PROFINET is the industrial Ethernet standard from Siemens and PROFIBUS International, dominant in European automation and Siemens PLC environments. EtherNet/IP is the industrial Ethernet standard from Rockwell Automation and ODVA, dominant in North American automation and Allen-Bradley PLC environments. Both run on standard Ethernet hardware but use incompatible application layers — device selection is driven by your PLC brand.
What is EtherCAT and when should I use it?
EtherCAT (Ethernet for Control Automation Technology) from Beckhoff provides cycle times below 1ms and jitter below 1 microsecond — the fastest industrial Ethernet protocol available. It is used for motion control systems requiring synchronised multi-axis servo coordination, fast I/O scanning for high-speed packaging and cutting machines, and any application where standard 10ms PROFINET/EtherNet/IP cycle times are too slow.
Can Modbus TCP replace PROFINET or EtherNet/IP?
Modbus TCP is a simple, universal protocol but lacks the real-time determinism, device diagnostics, and topology features of PROFINET and EtherNet/IP. For basic data collection from PLCs and sensors without strict timing requirements, Modbus TCP is sufficient and much simpler to implement. For machine control with distributed I/O and real-time requirements, PROFINET or EtherNet/IP is required.
Does TSL Automation supply hardware supporting industrial Ethernet protocols?
Yes — Avalue industrial PCs and embedded systems supplied by TSL Automation support all major industrial Ethernet protocols via software (OPC UA, Modbus TCP) and optional PCIe fieldbus cards (PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT). Cermate HMIs support PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and Modbus TCP natively. Contact our Mumbai team for protocol-specific hardware recommendations.
